How steel decks are connected with steel frame and column

The steel floor deck and steel frame & steel column are integral components of a steel building, and the connection between them is critical to the building’s structural integrity. Steel decks and steel frames & steel column are connected to one another and to the steel columns in a variety of ways, depending on the type of building and the desired load bearing capacity. Understanding how the steel deck is connected to the steel frame and steel column is essential for anyone responsible for putting together a steel structure.

Steel floor deck connected to steel frame

The deck and frame connection is typically done through a series of welds, bolts, or screws. The connection techniques used vary depending on the type of deck and frame being connected, the type of steel being used, and the expected load capacity of the building. The most common connection techniques include welding, bolting, and screwing.

When steel decks are used for floors, the connection of the steel floor deck to the steel frame is done by welding. When welding is used to connect the steel floor deck and frame, the connection is typically made with a fillet weld. This type of weld is very strong and is suitable for connecting steel floor decking and frames to one another. In most of Solideck ‘s projects, the connection between the steel floor decking and the steel frame is welded.

Bolting is another common connection technique used to connect steel decks and frames. Bolts are slightly larger than screws and are designed to be strong enough to hold the deck and frame together securely. Bolts are usually used when the expected load capacity of the building is high and the connection needs to be particularly strong. Bolts are typically made of steel or stainless steel and are designed to withstand corrosion. In the Dhaka Airport project served by Solideck, the steel floor decking and the steel frame are connected by bolts.

In general, the connection between the steel roof deck and the steel frame will be connected by screws. Screws are much smaller than bolts and are typically used when the expected load capacity is low and the connection does not need to be particularly strong. Screws are typically made of steel or stainless steel and are designed to resist corrosion.

When it comes to connecting the steel deck to the steel columns, the most common connection technique is welding. The steel column and steel deck are typically welded together using a fillet weld or a butt weld. A fillet weld is a type of weld made by laying an overlapping layer of metal along a joint and then welding it in place. A butt weld is a type of weld made by placing two pieces of metal together and then welding them in place. Both types of welds are very strong and are suitable for connecting steel decks to the steel columns.

When the steel deck encounters a steel column during laying, it should be cut according to the size of the steel column first, and then welded.

In general, bolts and screws are rarely used to connect steel decks to steel columns.
