How to prevent corrosion of steel deck
Steel deck substrate is one of the most popular flat roof substrate systems on one storey industrial, commercial and office buildings, and with good reason. It is related to the structural safety, service life and aesthetics of the building.
Regulations on Corrosion Protection of Steel Deck
The way most steel decks resist corrosion is by galvanizing the steel deck stock. According to the requirements of BS2989:1992 or BS EN10147:1992. The coating of composite floor steel decks requires zinc coating and shall comply with the requirements of BS2989:1992 or BS EN10147:1992. A total of 275g/m2 of coating including both sides (Type G275 coating to BS2989) normally refers to interior floors in non-aggressive environments, although specifications may vary due to service conditions. The principle is to sacrifice “zinc” to protect “steel”. According to the experimental data, the corrosion resistance of the 275g/m2 coating is about 30 years. If you want better corrosion resistance, you need to install ceilings and other measures. These are suitable for indoor steel floor deck.
If more years are needed, or in a harsh environment, galvanized or even baked galvanized materials are used, and color-coated panels are required on some steel roof decks or wall panels because they are exposed to the outside of. The method of these color-coated panels is generally 150g/m2 before baking, so that there is double protection, which can ensure the prevention of corrosion of steel deck.
Anticorrosion Measures for Steel Deck in Construction Stage
In addition to some requirements on raw materials, attention should be paid to the corrosion resistance of the steel deck during the construction phase and maintenance phase. Try not to damage the zinc layer or coating during the construction phase, and try to place the steel deck in a dry area; if the zinc layer or coating is damaged during the maintenance phase, repair it with paint in time to ensure that corrosion cannot damage the structure.
